Information on higher educational institutions (HEI) listed in March 2014, before the annexation of the Crimea and Sevastopol, and the occupation of Donetsk and Lugansk by illegal armed formations and Russian troops. Source – site osvita.ua.
The first figure shows the location and number of HEI in regional centers and other cities of Ukraine. Most HEI located in these cities:
Kyiv – 79
Kharkiv – 39
Lviv – 24
Odessa – 22
Dnipropetrovsk – 19
Donetsk – 19
Among the cities that are not regional centers the largest number of higher educational institutions located in Sevastopol (7), Bila Tserkva, Melitopol, Yalta (4). Click to enlarge:
Below is a graphic showing correlation between the current value of the population (on October 1, 2014, Crimea and Sevastopol – on April 1, 2014) and the number of HEI in areas. The absolute leader here is the city of Kyiv (1 HEI per 36 thousand population). It is followed by the Kharkiv Oblast (1 HEI per 68 thousand population), Crimea with Sevastopol (1 HEI per 74 thousand population). The lowest number of higher educational institutions are located in Sumy Oblast (1 HEI per 225 thousand population) and Volyn Oblast (1 HEI per 209 thousand population).
It should be noted that the statistics does not take into account the size of each HEI and the number of students in them. Hence, the map showing percentage of students among population may differ from the one above.
