Religious monopoly index in Ukraine at the beginning of 2013

This map of the church monopoly in Ukraine is based on statistics on religious communities by regions at the beginning of 2013. With the help of HHI (Herfindahl-Hirschman Index) it was calculated in which areas there is a higher competition of churches, and in which there is a dominance of one church. According to this index, 0.1 is the largest variety of religious communities, and 0.4 – the smallest (a church monopoly).

With the help of this visualization it be concluded, that most religious diversity among all administrative units of Ukraine is in the city of Kyiv. The least diversity is in the North (in Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts) and in two regions of Galicia – Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk oblasts. In the latter dominates the UGCC, and in Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts dominates UOC (MP) with the part of religious communities about 54% and 62%. Also it can be noticed, that religious diversity in the South is generally higher than in the West of the country.
